This vintage circa 1994 flexographic printing press had a range of SSD 590 first generation Digital DC Drives. So twenty four years old. They were also fitted with plastic fibre optic cable from “Microtac” optical encoders which are becoming obsolete.
This particular section was the centre unwind with dancer feedback and a build up of about 17:1 The original drive had the software to control winders built in including diameter calculators and PIDs. Our mission was to remove the old, fit the new 590P and then, not as planned, convert the microtac to an off the shelf wire ended encoder. All of this achieved in 1.5 days and with a much improved winder stability.
